	to the harmonics of their instruments. Some little variety had been obtained by having trumpets and horns pitched in various keys, but to little purpose, from a point of progress. There had been the appli­cation of the slide to the trumpet, after the manner of the trombone, yet it appears to have been neglected.
	Fig. 11. KEY-BUGLE. Then came the invention of a " valve," although not as we understand it at present, by an Irishman named Clagget. To this also little attention was paid. There is, however, a record that the first circular bass tuba with rotary action valves used in this country, was made for the Second Life Guards in 1809,2 which was probably on Clagget's system. The first really successful attempt at giving a com­plete scale to brass instruments was the invention of the key-bugle. This was brought out by James Halli-day, bandmaster of the Cavan Militia, who registered his patent in 18 io.3 The Duke of Kent heard Halliday
